Fiber craft - Eco fermeRustic Rose Garments

from field to finished garment

All Rustic Rose Garments are home -made by our selves. From animal to finished woollen. Rosemary does the care taking of the fibre animals and the sorting, cleaning and spinning of the fiber. All the yarn is spun on a foot treddled traditional spinning wheel. The fibre is chosen and spun to the thickeness suitable for the desired garment. Michele is the knitter & crochet , having the ability to modify all pattern to suit hand-spun yarn and the make up of her own patterns.
We both work together to fashion each finished garment with natural add ons , feathers, horn, antler and fur making each garment unique.

ll of our wool is hand cleaned to remove the straw, debris and short pieces of wool from the fibre. The best pieces of fibre are then selected and brushed with a pair of hand carders, with the exception of sheep wool, which is spun raw. It takes about 4 hours to brush 50g of wool, that’s 80 hours per kilo. Brushing makes the wool fluffy, free from knots and ready for spinning.

Fiber craft - Eco ferme

and spinning is a traditional craft not often seen these days. Originally wool was spun on a drop spindle and later, on a spinning wheel allowing the spinning to be done a little faster.

A single strand of yarn is rarely used as it comes off the spinning wheel, except for the purpose of weaving. For the knitting of jumpers and other garments it is usual to ply 2 or 3 yarns together. To do this, the bobbins of wool are put on a bobbin holder; the 2 ends of the yarns are tied onto the bobbin of the spinning wheel, which is then turned in the opposite direction to which it was spun.
To spin a 50g 2 ply ball of wool takes 2 hours (40 hours to do a kilo).

Hand knitting

All our garments are hand-knitted on bamboo neddles or hand- crocheted.
The imagination and style of the knitter is captured in each and every jumper making each one unique.
Knitting takes ¾ hour per 50g ball of wool but it can take longer depending of the detail put into the jumper.
